Rich Vogel Gaming Industry veteran and MMO expert has stepped down from Bioware and his position as executive producer for SW:TOR , The departure of someone that has been with the Company for so long and has been an integral part of the Pre and Post launch operations of the Game, sends an Ominous message to the Industry. That message made even more so as Bioware continues to it effort in “refining Star Wars: The Old Republic to continue to grow the game and the service.” by laying off workers at their Austin campus.
According to EA Vogel left the company in June, while staff members not laid off were relocated to EA Sports or other Austin-based projects.
“BioWare Austin is currently staffed to ensure the continued delivery of new, high quality game content for The Old Republic, and at a more frequent cadence,” the statement said. “In the weeks ahead, we will announce plans for growing SWTOR with new content, new players and new ways to play.”
Subtopic : Player reactions to the Departure and Layoffs.
People Claiming to be Devs or soon to be Former Devs are posting on Massively forums, about conditions at bioware, some seem to be trolls, and a few seem genuine. Personally I can’t tell which ones are what, but it does spark the discussion? Just what is going on at Bioware and what is happening to TOR. With the decline of MMO’s populations are we seeing a resurgence of Solitary or small group gaming like Ghost Recon or Crysys? Are we in the last days of MMO Nirvahna? If so what do you think Happened.
Related topic : PC or Console / Web Based or Client What WILL keep users playing a game for a long time, and what will (or should) it run on ? With so few New ideas in the past few years, is it any wonder MMO’s are losing subscribers and people are frustrated? Viktor Antonov (Art Director for Half-Life 2) said in an interview with Eurogamer
“It’s been a poor, poor five years for fiction in the video game industry.”
Antonov’s observations mostly revolve around the fact that there are so few new ideas for games, and that so many games look the same.
“I’m not a harsh critic of games,” Antonov insisted. “I’m extremely happy of where technology has gone. But artists and art directors should make their own life a little bit harder by pushing management to take more artistic risks, and use the technology to a better, higher level. That’s what I’ve been doing and suffering by – I’ve been spending as much time creating, as convincing the people who are financing games how important it is.
“We were always waiting for the next generation of great worlds or great graphics. Well, great graphics came; the worlds that came with these graphics are not up to the level of the graphics.
“Graphics used to be an excuse 10 years ago, that we can’t make great worlds. Right now, we have a lot of New Yorks, we have a lot of war games. Please everybody,” he pleaded, “let’s do more science-fiction and more crazy worlds out there.”
Do You agree with that statement?
Would it be possible for a group of people to develop a new idea for an older title , making it more modern and stable. If it is possible would it sell could it sell
Okay your MMO is getting you down. What do you do?
(New Patch = More Bugs)
Select Environment ? What is that!? so after the last patch you should have noticed that there is yet something else for us to click to get into the game . A drop down window appears and asks us to select an environment before we actually get to play the game. For others the launcher seems to Trigger the User Account control dialog in windows (this is normal for most people) Bioware is aware of the problem with the user environment screen and has stated that it will be addressed sometime in the near future, and that they are sorry for the inconvenience. As for people with the UAC popup It’s a security feature for your computer, and if you don’t know how to disable it then you probably need it and should be glad it’s there.
