Holosuite Magazine Under Appreciated Artist of the Month of August: Blue-But-Beautiful

Much like her art her hair is fabulous

Blue-But-Beautiful

One half a Bookmark for Holosuite’s own Alastor.

Hello there! My name is Nenia, but I am better known under the moniker of Blue-But-Beautiful or Blue, for short. I came up with the name almost ten years ago now, and people always ask me if it’s in reference to the fact I, very often, have blue hair. While I love the colour blue, it actually has nothing to do with me, physically, so much as it does my love of Marvel Comics. More accurately, one villainess in particular, who I have loved from the beginning; Mystique. She’s the epitome of a strong female, and I always gravitate towards these kinds of characters, plus she’s downright devious, and who doesn’t like a well-written villain?
My love of all things Marvel is probably superseded, only, by one other franchise that I’ve enjoyed ever since I was old enough to walk, and that’s Star Wars. You’ll see this subject feature frequently in my art, and it’s been a huge influence on much of the sci-fi work I produce.

I currently hail from the UK, where I have lived for the majority of my life, and for as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for drawing, designing and making just about anything my mind has taken a fancy to. Be that 2D work, costumes or props, I wanted to cover a wide spectrum of artistic techniques during my education before I settled on the one that I felt fit me best.

Nehsta Ku

It might surprise you, then, to know that it wasn’t my first career choice, I originally went to university to become a vet! What changed my mind? Well a chance meeting with an art school lecturer while selling some of my sketches at an arts market one weekend. She encouraged me to submit some of the work I was selling to a placement panel at the university she worked for, and I am very glad she did!
Since then, I graduated from the Cambridge School of Art in 2005 and have been working as a freelance illustrator, concentrating primarily on character concepts, and doing a good many sketch cards for commissions too.

Going freelance is pretty tough, you have no garunteed source of income each month, and it is necessary for me to take other jobs on

the side to keep the rent paid, but this doesn’t discourage me. It’s opened so many interesting doors already, one of which was being able to exhibit some of my Star Wars fan art, at the official Star Wars Celebration: Europe  in 2007. Off the back of that I had so many lovely comments and commissions, I was really overwhelmed at just how many people had seen my work and the feedback/ constructive crit I received was amazing. Not least of all because I had submitted work primarily featuring the Expanded Universes most hated (and my most beloved) species, the Yuuzhan Vong!

I’m currently open for commissions and reprints of current gallery work, be they big or small, I love a challenge, so why not check out my deviant art gallery or price list below?

The Secret World – Running Polaris Elite

After successfully completing The Last Train to Cairo mission during the Golden Weekend in The Secret World, we collectively decided to go into an Elite dungeon. The choice fell on Polaris. We numbered five: Galactrix (Healer), Xander (DPS), Rowan (DPS), Maiastas (DPS), Antida (Tank) Some members of the group, who shall remain nameless, were not as convinced that we’d make it. For those of you not familiar with the Beyond The Veil crew, you tell us we can’t do something or we’re not good enough to achieve something, we’re going to find a way to do it to prove you Read more →
